Overview

Rockburn Branch Park has two entrances about a mile apart, and they're effectively two different parks. East (5400 Landing Rd) is the sports-and-bikes side — four lighted ball diamonds, two synthetic turf multipurpose fields, and the Rockburn Branch Skills Park, a 3-acre dirt bike park with a pump track, three flow lines, a wood wall ride, and a 40-foot wooden roller coaster feature. Natural-surface trails head out from here into mature woods and across Landing Rd into Patapsco Valley State Park.

The big inclusive playground, the disc golf course, basketball, tennis, and pickleball are all at the other entrance — Rockburn Branch Park West, at 6105 Rockburn Branch Park Rd. If your kid wants a playground day, type that address instead. Show up at Landing Rd if you want a pump track, a soccer or baseball game, or a real woods walk.

Skip if your kids are under 3 and you're hoping for a slide-and-swing setup, if it's been raining (the dirt features and natural trails close in mud), or if you want a quiet weekend morning during youth-sports season — fall and spring weekends here belong to youth leagues.

What to know before you go

  • Hours: Sunrise to sunset, year-round. Howard County standard for parks.
  • Cost: Free. No parking fee, no admission, no skills-park fee.
  • Closure check before you drive: Call 410-313-4455 if it's been raining or rained recently. The dirt skills park and the natural-surface trails close when wet to keep the features from getting wrecked.
  • Parking: Free. Main paved lot near the fields and concession stand, plus a gravel overflow lot up the hill near the skills park. Reviewers consistently flag parking as tight on tournament weekends.
  • Bathrooms: Seasonal flush restrooms in the brick building near the Landing Rd park office. Year-round portable toilets near the pavilions and fields. The skills park itself has none — walk back down to the field area. No changing tables confirmed.
  • Water: Water available near the park office in season. Bring your own bottles up to the skills park — nothing confirmed at the top of the hill.
  • Food: Picnics welcome. Picnic tables and shade scattered through the East area, including near the skills park. The concession stand is only open during scheduled games. No vending. No food on the athletic fields.
  • Stroller-friendly: Partially. Paved paths near the Landing Rd office are accessible. The natural-surface trails are dirt singletrack with roots and stream crossings — not stroller terrain. Most of the playground/disc-golf/paved-loop stroller stuff is over at the West entrance.
  • Accessibility: Paved accessible paths from the Landing Rd office area. ADA parking. Bus/motorcoach accessible.
  • Skills park rules: Helmets required. Closes when wet — don't show up after a storm without calling first.
  • Dogs: On leash, owner cleans up. Not allowed on athletic fields or playgrounds (countywide rule).
  • Alcohol and smoking: Both prohibited in all Howard County parks.
  • What to bring: Water, sunscreen, a helmet (and ideally pads) if anyone's riding the skills park, water shoes if your kid will wade in Rockburn Branch, bug spray in summer, and a packed lunch. Closest convenience food is back out toward US-1.

Tips for families

  • Type the address into your GPS, not the park name. "Rockburn Branch Park" routes some apps to the West entrance and some to the East. If you want the skills park or the fields, 5400 Landing Rd is the one. If you want the playground, 6105 Rockburn Branch Park Rd.
  • Don't park in the main lot and walk to the skills park. Drive past the concession stand, take the gravel road up the hill, and park in the overflow lot at the top. It's a long uphill push with a balance bike otherwise.
  • Helmet or no ride. The skills park requires helmets. Working brakes too. If your kid showed up on a balance bike with no brake, the pump track is fine but the flow lines are not.
  • Beginner line first, then move up. The skills park has three flow lines — beginner, intermediate, advanced — plus a 5,000 sq ft pump track. The pump track is a friendlier intro for younger kids than the lines.
  • Call 410-313-4455 if it rained in the last 24 hours. The dirt features and natural-surface trails close when muddy. Driving 25 minutes to find the gates closed is the worst version of this trip.
  • Avoid Saturday and Sunday mornings during youth-sports season. Spring (March–June) and fall (August–November) weekends fill the lot with soccer, baseball, and lacrosse families. Weekday mornings and off-season weekends are wide open.
  • Cross Landing Rd for a real hike. The East entrance backs onto Patapsco Valley State Park's Belmont/Avalon trail network, which connects on toward Belmont Manor. Stream crossings on the way — bring shoes that can get wet.
  • Bring water shoes if your kid is a wader. Rockburn Branch runs through the park with crayfish, minnows, and water striders to find. The trails cross it at multiple spots.
  • Pavilion rentals are mostly a West thing. The big reservable pavilion (capacity 90) is at the West entrance. If you want a shelter on the East side for a party, call 410-313-4682 before assuming.
  • Pair it with food on the way home. Nothing on-site beyond a game-day concession stand. US-1 in Elkridge has the usual options about 5 minutes back out.

Best time to visit

  • Time of day: Weekday mornings are easily the quietest — easy parking, empty skills park, no league games. Late afternoons in spring and fall pick up with practices.
  • Day of week: Weekdays beat weekends by a wide margin during sports seasons. If you're going on a weekend, go early.
  • Season: Spring and fall mornings are the sweet spot for the trails — comfortable temps, full canopy. Summer afternoons are hot in the open field areas; the woods stay cooler. Winter visits work for the trails and skills park (when dry) but flush restrooms and water are seasonal.
  • Weather contingency: Outdoor only, and the dirt features close when wet. If rain is in the forecast, default to an indoor backup — the skills park is the first thing to shut down.

FAQs

What's the difference between Rockburn Branch Park East and the main park? They're two entrances to the same county park, about a mile apart. East (5400 Landing Rd) has the bike skills park, ball diamonds, and turf fields. West (6105 Rockburn Branch Park Rd) has the inclusive playground, disc golf, basketball, tennis, and pickleball. Pick the entrance based on what you came to do.

Is there a playground at the East entrance? No playground is listed on Howard County's official East-area page. The main inclusive playground is at the West entrance. If a playground is your goal, go West.

Can my kid ride the pump track? Yes. The Rockburn Branch Skills Park has a beginner flow line and a 5,000 sq ft pump track that's friendly for kids learning. Helmets are required, working brakes for the flow lines. It closes when the dirt is wet.

Are there real bathrooms? Seasonal flush restrooms in the brick building near the Landing Rd office, plus year-round portable toilets near the pavilions and fields. None at the skills park itself.

How long should we plan for? An hour or two for the skills park alone. Three to four hours if you're doing the skills park plus a trail walk, or pairing it with a stop at the West entrance.

Is it stroller-friendly? Partially. Paved paths near the Landing Rd office are accessible. The dirt trails are not — roots, singletrack, and stream crossings.

Are dogs allowed? Yes, on leash. Not allowed on athletic fields or playgrounds.

Can we hike into Patapsco State Park from here? Yes. The East entrance is across Landing Rd from Patapsco Valley State Park, and trails connect on through to Belmont Manor. Expect stream crossings.

Is there anything to do here when it's been raining? Not much. The skills park and natural trails both close in muddy conditions. Call 410-313-4455 first; otherwise switch to an indoor plan.
